Lewis Hamilton’s much-anticipated move to Ferrari may be facing a harsh reality check, as comments from a rival Formula 1 team principal seem to have ended the initial excitement surrounding his switch to the iconic Maranello team. Hamilton’s transfer from Mercedes to Ferrari has generated massive hype, with his first picture donning the Ferrari red earning over 4.3 million likes on Instagram. Ferrari has made full use of this buzz, posting 24 more Hamilton-centered images to boost their marketing reach.

Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes, where he spent 12 seasons and won six world championships and 84 race victories, marks one of the most high-profile driver signings in F1 history. Joining Ferrari, the sport’s most historically successful team, represents a new chapter in his illustrious career. However, as the hype begins to fade, Hamilton must now deliver results, or risk falling short of Ferrari fans’ high expectations, a fate that many drivers have faced before.

Hamilton’s remarkable legacy in F1 suggests that he has the talent to succeed with Ferrari and bring them closer to their first title since 2008. However, his recent form raises doubts about whether he can live up to those lofty expectations. A record-breaking eighth world championship title would be the only way to justify his move, but that goal seems far from achievable in 2024. Hamilton has appeared downbeat about his current performance, even admitting at one point that he “wasn’t fast anymore,” as he finished a career-low seventh in the drivers’ standings behind his teammate, George Russell.
Hamilton’s new teammate, Charles Leclerc, might present an even greater challenge than Russell. Leclerc is widely regarded as one of the fastest qualifiers on the grid, and qualifying has been Hamilton’s biggest weakness in the 2024 season. If Ferrari provides both drivers with a car capable of competing for the championship, Leclerc is likely to be the one who takes the title, given his current form. However, it is important to note Hamilton’s impressive 2023 season, where he managed to secure third place in the drivers’ championship despite Mercedes often having the fourth-fastest car.
There were also standout moments in Hamilton’s 2024 season, including a brilliant victory at the British Grand Prix, where he secured a record-breaking ninth win at his home circuit. Despite his struggles throughout the season, this performance demonstrated that Hamilton still has the ability to deliver top-tier results, hinting that his potential at Ferrari should not be discounted just yet.
