FIA Officially Sanctions Mercedes at Japanese GP after…read more.

The FIA has penalized Mercedes during the Japanese Grand Prix, adding to the team’s recent challenges in the 2025 Formula 1 season. The punishment followed an investigation into a possible rule violation over the Suzuka race weekend.

Officials determined that Mercedes’ W16 had a rear wing design that did not fully comply with technical regulations. As a result, the FIA imposed a reprimand and a grid penalty on both George Russell and Mick Schumacher.

Mercedes, currently striving to close the gap to Ferrari and Red Bull, expressed disappointment with the decision. Team Principal Toto Wolff commented, “While we respect the FIA’s ruling, we believe this was an unintentional misinterpretation of the rules. We will work closely with the FIA to ensure full compliance moving forward.”

The penalty had a major impact on Mercedes’ performance, with Russell missing out on a podium finish and Schumacher struggling to earn points. The setback dashed their hopes of a strong result at Suzuka.

As Ferrari and Red Bull continue to dominate, Mercedes faces an uphill battle to regain competitiveness. With the season moving forward, all attention will be on how the Silver Arrows respond to this latest challenge.
