Red Bull Reportedly Prepared for Max Verstappen Suspension a…read more

Red Bull Racing has reportedly laid out contingency plans in the event that their star driver Max Verstappen is handed a one-race suspension later in the Formula 1 season. This comes in the aftermath of a controversial incident at the Spanish Grand Prix that has sparked considerable discussion across the F1 paddock.

During the recent race in Barcelona, Verstappen was involved in a dramatic collision with George Russell of Mercedes. The contact, which appeared to be deliberate to some observers, was deemed serious by race officials. As a result, Verstappen was hit with a 10-second time penalty during the race and, more significantly, handed three penalty points on his FIA super licence.

The accumulation of penalty points is a serious issue in Formula 1. If a driver collects 12 points within a 12-month period, they are subject to an automatic one-race ban. Verstappen’s current tally now puts him closer to this threshold, which has forced Red Bull to consider the possibility of a temporary absence for their top driver.

In light of this development, the team has reportedly finalized a plan to replace Verstappen, if necessary, should a ban be enforced. That plan may include calling upon Daniel Ricciardo, who is currently racing for RB (Red Bull’s sister team, formerly AlphaTauri), and remains under the Red Bull umbrella. Ricciardo, a former Red Bull driver, has been the subject of ongoing evaluation this season, as his form continues to be scrutinized.

Ricciardo’s performance has been somewhat inconsistent since his return to the grid. However, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko are said to be keeping a close eye on his progress. While Ricciardo hasn’t quite recaptured the race-winning form of his previous Red Bull stint, the team appears to value his experience and ability to step into the main seat at short notice if needed.

Horner previously indicated that Ricciardo remains in consideration for future opportunities, depending on his ability to impress over the coming races. His familiarity with Red Bull’s systems, engineers, and expectations gives him an edge over less experienced candidates. However, the team is also believed to be weighing other potential options, including reserve and junior drivers, should Verstappen’s availability become an issue.

Verstappen’s penalty in Spain came after stewards reviewed the footage and concluded that he bore primary responsibility for the incident with Russell. The collision, which occurred during a heated battle for position, raised eyebrows both on and off the track. While Verstappen argued that it was a racing incident, officials were not convinced and handed down one of the more severe punishments seen this season.

The added three penalty points push Verstappen dangerously close to the 12-point limit, intensifying scrutiny on his driving behavior moving forward. With a long season ahead and several high-stakes races still on the calendar, any further infractions could tip the balance and trigger an automatic suspension.

Red Bull, aware of the potential consequences, is taking no chances. The team is reportedly ensuring that all possible substitutes are prepared and ready should they be needed. This includes making sure Ricciardo is race-fit and familiar with the latest Red Bull machinery, should a last-minute call-up be required.

In the meantime, Verstappen will need to tread carefully for the remainder of the season. Any additional penalties could prove costly—not just for him personally, but for Red Bull’s championship ambitions. As the defending World Champion and the team’s clear number one driver, Verstappen’s absence would undoubtedly shake up the competitive landscape.

While no formal decision has been made, Red Bull’s proactive approach underscores how seriously they are treating the possibility of a one-race ban. Ricciardo, eager to reclaim a top seat, could find himself back in Red Bull colors sooner than expected—should circumstances demand it.
