Leeds United have been encouraged to pursue a deal for Blackburn Rovers striker Sammie Szmodics as they aim to strengthen their squad for a Championship promotion push. Despite scoring three goals in their season opener against Portsmouth at Elland Road, Leeds failed to capitalize on several key opportunities that could have secured the victory, with Brendan Aaronson notably missing a late chance.

Throughout the summer, Leeds have been linked with Szmodics, who was the top scorer in the Championship last season with 27 goals. The 28-year-old continued his fine form by scoring in Blackburn’s 4-2 win over Derby County to kick off the new season. Leeds’ manager, Daniel Farke, chose to start the young Spaniard Mateo Joseph in the forward position instead of more established options like Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe, following Joseph’s impressive pre-season performances.

However, former Scotland and Rangers striker Kris Boyd, speaking on Sky Sports, suggested that Leeds should consider investing some of the funds they received from the sales of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville into securing Szmodics. Boyd highlighted that while Leeds created many chances, they lacked the cutting edge to convert them, relying heavily on the efforts of wingers like Wilfried Gnonto and Dan James. He pointed out that players like Jayden Bogle and Junior Firpo provided good service by delivering crosses into the box, but Joseph, despite his efforts, was unable to make a significant impact.

Szmodics is expected to be valued around £10 million, and Leeds are not the only club interested in the prolific forward. Ipswich Town are reportedly eager to negotiate a deal, while Everton has also been linked with Szmodics throughout the summer, though no formal bid has been made yet. Boyd’s remarks underline the belief that Leeds may need a proven goal scorer like Szmodics to enhance their promotion bid this season.
