Theo Walcott Explains Mikel Arteta’s Unconventional Tactics: Pickpockets and Mental Toughness
Theo Walcott has shed light on the true reason behind Mikel Arteta’s unusual tactic of hiring pickpockets to steal his players’ phones, revealing it was more than just a prank.
Arteta, known for his unconventional management style, has previously made headlines with unique strategies, such as playing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” before a match against Liverpool. This summer, he took his quirks to another level by arranging for professional pickpockets to steal his team’s valuables during a team dinner.
While Roy Keane mocked Arteta’s methods, Walcott believes there’s a deeper purpose behind them. “It’s all about getting people talking,” Walcott told Mail Sport. “It diverts attention from football and creates a buzz around something unusual. Mikel aims to make everyone more alert, not just in football but in everyday life.”
Walcott recalls a similar incident from his time with Arsenal under Arsène Wenger, where Arteta had locked the team in the dressing room to deliver a stern message. “He kept us in there and laid out some home truths,” Walcott said. “After that, I knew he was destined to be a manager. It also helped us secure a top-four finish.”
Walcott, who spent time with Arteta over the summer, is optimistic about Arsenal’s chances this season. “They are incredibly structured and motivated,” he said. “Having seen their preseason and the way Mikel has prepared them, I believe this could be their year. They’ve learned from past experiences and have the right mix of new and experienced players.”
