Lewis Hamilton’s Solution to End Max Verstappen D…to F1…Read More

For the first time since their thrilling battle for the 2021 F1 Drivers’ Championship, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are once again locked in a fierce rivalry. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, and Verstappen, the reigning champion and favorite for a fourth consecutive title, have had a complicated and highly competitive relationship on and off the track.

Their 2021 battle culminated in a controversial finale in Abu Dhabi, where Verstappen won his first title under contentious circumstances. Then-race director Michael Masi’s handling of a late-race safety car period led to widespread debate, and many believed it denied Hamilton an eighth championship. This incident not only intensified their rivalry but also left many fans anticipating further epic battles between these two generational talents.

However, the introduction of new F1 regulations in 2022, which Red Bull mastered while Mercedes struggled, shifted the balance of power. Red Bull and Verstappen dominated the 2022 and 2023 seasons, leaving Mercedes and Hamilton playing catch-up. As a result, the highly anticipated continuation of their rivalry was put on hold as Verstappen cruised to back-to-back titles.

To the delight of F1 fans, 2024 has seen a resurgence from Mercedes. The team has won three of the last four races, with Hamilton taking victory in two of them. This resurgence has reignited the debate over which driver is truly the best. With Hamilton holding seven titles and Verstappen closing in on his fourth, the discussion has intensified, and comparisons between the two have become a regular talking point in the F1 paddock.

Back in 2019, during Hamilton’s period of dominance, he offered a tantalizing solution to the debate over his supremacy: Verstappen joining him at Mercedes. At the time, some detractors claimed Hamilton’s success was due to the superiority of his Mercedes car. Hamilton suggested that if Verstappen were to join him as a teammate, it would be an opportunity to prove that his success wasn’t solely based on his car’s performance.

He stated, “I see positives and potential negatives. In some ways, it would work well for me. I see stories that we have different cars and that is the only way [I beat him], so that would give me the opportunity to show that is not the case.”

While this dream scenario of the two rivals racing as teammates hasn’t materialized, Hamilton’s proposal was a reminder of his competitive spirit and desire to prove himself against the best. The prospect of Verstappen joining Mercedes one day hasn’t been entirely ruled out either. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has openly expressed his interest in signing the Dutchman, although the chances seem slim with Hamilton reportedly headed for Ferrari, which could likely be his final team in F1.

More recently, their rivalry took center stage at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, where the two drivers collided on track. As Verstappen attempted to overtake Hamilton at turn one, he made contact with the Mercedes, sending his car airborne. Despite the setback, Verstappen managed to recover and finish fifth, while Hamilton secured a podium finish in third place.

The incident added another chapter to their long list of on-track clashes. Verstappen, already frustrated during the race, had an animated exchange with his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, adding to the tension.

In the aftermath, Hamilton was asked about the incident during the following Belgian Grand Prix. He offered some cutting advice for his younger rival, emphasizing the importance of leadership and composure.

“You have to act as a team leader,” Hamilton said. “Remember you are a teammate to lots of people, and you have to act like a world champion. Not like it was last weekend…”

Hamilton’s words reflected his belief that being a world champion is about more than just winning races; it’s also about setting an example for the entire team. His advice seemed aimed at reminding Verstappen that success in F1 requires a balance of talent, teamwork, and leadership.

As the 2024 season progresses, fans eagerly await more clashes between these two titans of the sport. Whether or not Verstappen takes Hamilton’s advice remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: their rivalry is far from over, and F1 fans will continue to be captivated by their on-track battles for years to come.
