The Scottish Premiership saw a flurry of transfer activity this summer, with Celtic and Rangers leading the charge on deadline day. Both clubs made significant moves to bolster their squads, ensuring the window was memorable for Scottish football fans.
Celtic made headlines by smashing their record transfer fee, spending £11 million to bring in midfielder Arne Engels from Augsburg. This came shortly after the club secured a record fee for the sale of Matt O’Riley to Brighton at the beginning of the week. The Hoops were active throughout the window, also bringing in goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel from Anderlecht and Viljami Sinisalo from Aston Villa. Other notable additions include midfielder Paulo Bernardo from Benfica and forward Adam Idah from Norwich City. Celtic also secured the services of Auston Trusty from Sheffield United and Luke McCowan from Dundee, strengthening their defensive and midfield options. Barcelona’s Alex Valle also joined on loan.
Celtic saw several high-profile departures as well. Besides O’Riley’s move to Brighton, forward Hyeon-gyu Oh left for Genk, and Sead Haksabanovic joined Malmo. Joe Hart retired, while Benjamin Siegrist moved to Rapid Bucharest. Other exits included Mikey Johnston to West Bromwich Albion and Rocco Vata to Watford. Celtic also loaned out multiple players, including Gustaf Lagerbielke to Twente and Marco Tilio to Melbourne City.
Rangers, under new manager Philippe Clement, were equally busy on deadline day. Mohamed Diomande joined on loan from Nordsjaelland, with the option to make the move permanent, while Liam Kelly arrived from Motherwell. Notable loan signings included Vaclav Cerny from Wolfsburg and Neraysho Kasanwirjo from Feyenoord.
Rangers also offloaded several players, with Connor Goldson moving to Aris Limassol, and John Lundstram and Borna Barisic heading to Trabzonspor. Scott Wright left for Birmingham City, while others, including Todd Cantwell, Ryan Jack, and Kemar Roofe, also departed the club.
Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, clubs were active in both signings and departures. Aberdeen brought in a host of players, including forward Topi Keskinen from HJK Helsinki and midfielder Ante Palaversa from Troyes. Meanwhile, Dundee United signed forward Meshack Ubochioma from Zalaegerszegi TE and brought in several players on loan, including Luca Stephenson from Liverpool. United saw significant turnover, with multiple players leaving, including Brandon Forbes to Norwich City and Archie Meekison to Bohemian.
