The confrontation stemmed from comments Vowles made regarding her son, Mick Schumacher, which were perceived as dismissive and critical.

When asked to explain why Schumacher was overlooked, Vowles’ comments sparked controversy. He stated, “[Franco is] the only driver to have driven the car this year in FP1 and on the data that we can see from what he’s doing and how he’s performing, he’s making significant steps. And so it becomes a decision. Do we invest in the future, or do we invest in someone else as a result of it? I think both would fall into a category of not special. I think we have to be straightforward about this. Mick isn’t special, he would have just been good.”

The statement, particularly the characterization of Schumacher as “not special,” drew significant backlash. Corinna Schumacher, who has fiercely protected her son’s career and legacy, reportedly confronted Vowles after Friday’s second practice session at Monza. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who has a long-standing relationship with Vowles from their time together at Mercedes, also expressed his disapproval of the comments. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Wolff acknowledged that Vowles’ straightforward approach could be problematic. “Sometimes he says things too straightforwardly. That was a statement he could have done without,” Wolff said, implying that the comments were unnecessarily harsh and could have been phrased more diplomatically.

The backlash prompted Vowles to clarify his remarks. He explained that his intention was not to belittle Schumacher but to make a comparison between drivers who have won multiple world championships and those who have not. “Where I read the headlines afterwards this morning, what really came across is using the word special in the context of Mick. And I really want to clarify what I mean, first and foremost, I’m not here to put Mick down. Mick is in a World Championship team [Mercedes] who have chosen him as reserve driver. And there’s good reason behind it. That is because he’s an incredibly strong candidate. And the word special? I use it in the context of multiple world champions like Ayrton Senna fundamentally, Lewis [Hamilton] as well. Clearly, that’s a foolish thing to do because that’s the comparison.”

Vowles emphasized that his decision to go with Colapinto was based on data and the need to invest in the future of Williams. He acknowledged that Schumacher is a strong driver, but in his assessment, Colapinto offered more promise for the team’s long-term development. However, the word “special” was meant to distinguish drivers like Senna and Hamilton, who have achieved extraordinary success in the sport.

Despite the clarification, the incident highlights the pressures and sensitivities surrounding young drivers trying to make their mark in Formula 1, particularly those with famous last names. Mick Schumacher, the son of one of the sport’s greatest legends, is under immense scrutiny as he seeks to build his own legacy.
