Martin Brundle Demands F1 Rule Change After Italian GP Incident Overshadows Charles Leclerc’s Victory
Formula 1 pundit Martin Brundle has called for an urgent rule change following a controversial incident at the start of the Italian Grand Prix. The race, which saw Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc secure a thrilling victory at Monza, was nearly overshadowed by issues during the pre-race procedure that raised concerns over safety.
Leclerc’s win was an emotional triumph in front of the passionate Ferrari fans, the Tifosi, as he fended off challenges from the McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. While Leclerc started behind Norris on the grid, McLaren’s Piastri was the early leader, overtaking his teammate on the opening lap. Piastri’s strategy centered around a two-stop approach, pitting for fresh tires on lap 38. In contrast, Leclerc and his Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz opted for a one-stop strategy, stretching their first set of hard tires to the end.
Sainz eventually dropped behind both McLaren drivers, but Leclerc held firm at the front to clinch a vital victory. Despite the success, the race’s opening stages were marred by a controversial delay that saw the front-row drivers left waiting on the grid.
The issue arose as the drivers prepared for the race start. With Norris and Piastri lined up on the front row, it became clear that the backmarkers were taking a significant amount of time to get into position. By the time Zhou Guanyu, starting in 20th position, had reached the grid, over 30 seconds had elapsed.
This delay resulted in a noticeable drop in tire temperatures for the drivers at the front, increasing the likelihood of tire lock-ups or accidents at the notoriously tricky Turn 1. Brundle, commentating for Sky Sports, voiced his frustration at the situation, describing the procedure as potentially hazardous.
“It’s too long. They need to talk to the drivers at the back about getting underway,” Brundle remarked during the broadcast. He emphasized that the lengthy wait posed a serious risk to drivers at the front, who depend on maintaining tire temperatures to avoid mistakes or crashes, especially during the critical first few corners.
Brundle went on to urge Formula 1 authorities to address the issue at the next drivers’ meeting. He suggested that the current system is flawed and that immediate changes are needed to prevent similar problems in future races. One possible solution would be to introduce a maximum lap time for the formation lap, ensuring that drivers at the back of the grid are not delayed in reaching their positions.
This kind of solution has already been implemented in qualifying sessions. Following concerns over drivers creating traffic jams by driving unnecessarily slowly on their outlaps, the FIA introduced a rule at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. According to race director Niels Wittich, drivers were warned against exceeding a set maximum time between specific points on the track during and after qualifying laps, including in-laps and out-laps.
Brundle believes a similar rule could be applied to the formation lap, ensuring that all drivers are in position quickly and safely. With tire temperatures crucial to a smooth race start, he argued that action is needed to avoid future incidents that could jeopardize the safety of those at the front of the grid.
While Leclerc’s win was a moment of celebration for Ferrari and their fans, Brundle’s call for a rule change has sparked conversation about the safety measures in place for the race start. Whether Formula 1 will make changes in response to this incident remains to be seen, but the issue is likely to be discussed in upcoming drivers’ meetings.
