Sainz prepares Hamilton for Ferrari move: ‘People don’t…’ read more.

Carlos Sainz has shared insights into the experience of being a Ferrari driver in Formula 1 as he prepares to make way for Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join Ferrari for the 2025 season. The anticipated move will see Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, donning the iconic red of Ferrari—a dream for many drivers and a unique chapter in his storied career.

For Sainz, the transition to Ferrari back in 2021 was a significant moment in his career. He moved to the Italian team from McLaren, replacing the outgoing Sebastian Vettel. The Spanish driver quickly adapted to his new environment and made an impressive impact in his debut season, outperforming teammate Charles Leclerc and solidifying his position within the team. Over the course of his tenure with Ferrari, Sainz has notched three Grand Prix victories and secured five pole positions. One of those memorable poles came in front of the passionate Tifosi at Monza in 2023, further cementing his connection with the Ferrari faithful.

Speaking about his experience as a Ferrari driver, Sainz emphasized that it requires a unique set of skills and an understanding of the team’s culture and expectations. “You learn how to be a Ferrari driver,” Sainz explained. “That is actually something that people don’t imagine, but you have to know how Ferrari works, how Ferrari is, and you also improve your Ferrari driver skills during the four years.” He highlighted that driving for Ferrari goes beyond just racing—it’s about embodying the spirit of the team and understanding the immense pressure and passion that comes with representing one of the most iconic names in motorsport.

Sainz also touched on the distinct atmosphere that comes with racing for Ferrari, particularly during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. For Ferrari drivers, the Italian Grand Prix weekend is unlike any other on the Formula 1 calendar. The sheer volume of fans, known as the Tifosi, creates an electric atmosphere that few other teams experience. “The Italian Grand Prix weekend is by far the busiest and most unique,” Sainz noted. However, despite the hectic nature of the weekend, Sainz explained that the energy and passion of the fans have a rejuvenating effect.

“As busy as this weekend gets, the energy of the Tifosi and the adrenaline of the weekend carries you,” Sainz said. “It was the case last year. I remember thinking that I was very busy last year, but I also remember being full of energy. So it’s something that takes care of itself almost.”

For Sainz, embracing the chaos of the Italian Grand Prix has been key to thriving in that environment. He has learned to see the busyness as part of the experience rather than a distraction. “I’m actually trying to embrace the busyness of the weekend, how hectic it is, how many Tifosi you come across, and how much time you spend with them, signing autographs and receiving their support. It actually gives you energy and helps you enjoy the moment,” Sainz explained.

He added that while some might find the constant demands on their time overwhelming, he chooses to see it in a positive light. “It’s a lot busier, but you can see it both ways. ‘Oh, it’s so busy, I don’t have time for myself,’ or you can see it in a positive way, which is: this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I’ve been lucky enough to experience for four years. Try and enjoy it. Embrace it.”

As Hamilton prepares to join Ferrari, Sainz’s advice will likely prove invaluable. The transition to Ferrari is not just about adapting to a new car or team; it’s about understanding and embracing the unique culture that surrounds the team. Hamilton, who has spent over a decade at Mercedes and McLaren, will face new challenges at Ferrari, but with his experience and championship pedigree, he is likely to adapt quickly.

For Sainz, moving aside for a driver of Hamilton’s caliber is part of the ebb and flow of Formula 1. He understands the pressures and expectations that come with representing Ferrari, and his experience over the past four years will serve as a blueprint for Hamilton as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.

As the 2024 season unfolds, all eyes will be on Ferrari as they prepare for this significant change. For now, Sainz continues to focus on his current campaign with Ferrari, but his reflections offer a glimpse into the unique world of being a Ferrari driver—something that Hamilton will soon experience firsthand.
