Lewis Hamilton and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team have admitted they were not caught off guard by their dismal performance during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The race, which has been described as both “nightmarish” and “miserable” for the seven-time world champion and his team, highlighted the ongoing struggles they face this season.
Despite high hopes leading into the race, Mercedes continued to grapple with their car’s limitations on the challenging Baku street circuit. Hamilton endured a difficult time behind the wheel, battling poor grip and inconsistent pace, which ultimately resulted in a lackluster finish.
Team principal Toto Wolff expressed his frustration but acknowledged that the outcome was expected given the challenges the team had been facing throughout the season. “We knew this race would be tough, especially on a circuit like this where our car’s weaknesses are magnified,” Wolff stated. “It’s disappointing, but not a surprise.”
Hamilton echoed his team’s sentiments, adding that the weekend felt like an uphill battle from the start. “We’ve been struggling to find the right balance with the car, and it really showed today. We knew it was going to be a hard race, but it’s still tough to experience it firsthand,” he said after the race.
As Mercedes continues to work on developing their car and addressing the issues that have plagued them, both Hamilton and the team remain hopeful for a turnaround in future races, though they acknowledge that it will take time and effort to return to a competitive form.
