F1 REPORT TODAY: Lando Norris: Chasing Down Verstappen…….
Norris Eyes Title Push After Singapore Triumph, Targets Verstappen
Lando Norris believes chasing down current Formula 1 World Championship leader Max Verstappen is “definitely possible” following his dominant performance at the Singapore Grand Prix. The McLaren driver produced a spectacular display at the Marina Bay Circuit, beating Verstappen by over 20 seconds and reducing the Dutchman’s lead in the championship to 52 points.
The Singapore Grand Prix was a crucial moment in the season for Norris, as his victory not only showcased McLaren’s recent surge in form but also sent a strong message to the Red Bull camp. Norris’s win, coupled with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri securing a podium finish in third, demonstrated that McLaren is now a serious contender in the championship.
The victory marked the first time in the 2024 season that Norris outpaced Verstappen so significantly. The 24-year-old Brit has been one of the most consistent drivers in the field, but the triumph in Singapore elevated him to a new level. Norris, while aware of the challenge that lies ahead, is hopeful that his team can continue their upward trajectory in the final stages of the season.
“We need to keep up this form for the rest of the season if I want to have a chance to catch Max,” Norris stated after the race. “We’re working hard, and if I can continue performing like I did this weekend, it’s definitely possible.”
With six rounds remaining, including three sprint weekends, Norris must reduce Verstappen’s lead by an average of 8.66 points per weekend to have a chance at the title. A maximum of 180 points is still up for grabs across these six Grands Prix, with additional points available for fastest laps and sprint race results. This means every remaining weekend is crucial for Norris, as he cannot afford any slip-ups if he is to continue applying pressure on Verstappen.
After the near month-long break that precedes the United States Grand Prix from October 18-20, Norris and McLaren will need to capitalize on every opportunity to close the gap. The U.S. race will mark the start of a critical final phase in the championship, with Norris eyeing strong results in both the sprint and main race events.
The challenge for Norris is not just Verstappen’s commanding lead but also the sheer consistency that the Red Bull driver has displayed throughout the season. Verstappen has been virtually untouchable, winning multiple races and setting a pace that few have been able to match. However, Norris’s performance in Singapore has raised hopes that McLaren could provide a serious challenge in the closing stages.
“We know how dominant Max and Red Bull have been this season,” Norris admitted. “But after this weekend, I have more belief that we can push them until the end. It’s not going to be easy, but we’re ready for the fight.”
McLaren’s resurgence is not only evident in Norris’s performances but also in Oscar Piastri’s rapid development. The rookie Australian driver has continued to impress in his debut season, showing remarkable maturity and speed. His third-place finish in Singapore further emphasized McLaren’s growing competitiveness.
With both drivers now regularly fighting at the front of the grid, McLaren’s confidence is soaring. Team principal Andrea Stella has praised the team’s work in recent months, highlighting the improvements made in their aerodynamic package and overall race strategy.
Norris hopes that the title battle will go down to the wire, setting up a thrilling showdown in Abu Dhabi for the final race of the season from December 6-8. For that to happen, he will need to be within 26 points of Verstappen going into the last race weekend.
While the odds may still be in Verstappen’s favor, Norris’s statement victory in Singapore has injected new excitement into the championship. If McLaren can maintain their newfound pace and Norris can continue to outperform the reigning champion, Formula 1 fans could be in for a dramatic conclusion to the 2024 season.
