Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, has confirmed that Mercedes considered signing Red Bull’s technical mastermind, Adrian Newey, but ultimately decided against it. This revelation has added fuel to speculation about Newey’s future, especially as he is set to join Aston Martin in 2025.

Newey, who had been Red Bull’s chief technical officer for nearly two decades, is currently on gardening leave, a typical break given to high-ranking figures before switching teams. While Ferrari was seen as a potential landing spot for Newey, Mercedes’ name was rarely in the conversation. However, Wolff has now revealed that there were internal discussions at Mercedes regarding the possibility of bringing Newey on board.

According to Wolff, he held talks with Mercedes’ technical director, James Allison, about the prospect of Newey joining their team. “I gave it a thought, and James and I discussed it,” Wolff said when asked if Newey was ever a serious target for Mercedes. Despite the high regard they hold for Newey’s work, both Wolff and Allison concluded that their current structure and team dynamics were where their confidence lay. “We elaborated on it and came to the conclusion that the structure we have today is the one we have faith in and that we want to continue,” Wolff explained.

The decision to pass on Newey reflects Mercedes’ trust in their existing technical leadership. James Allison, who rejoined the team in a lead role in 2021, is highly respected in the paddock and has been instrumental in maintaining Mercedes’ competitiveness in recent years. Wolff emphasized that while they greatly respect Newey’s expertise, they are committed to their current team setup. “Having said that, both of us have great respect for Newey, but we passed on that because we believe in our team,” Wolff concluded.

This development comes amid Newey’s planned transition to Aston Martin as their technical managing partner from March 2025. Aston Martin has been aggressively building a strong team, and Newey’s arrival is seen as a major coup for the Silverstone-based outfit. Aston Martin’s owner, Lawrence Stroll, has been investing heavily in the team, and Newey’s addition is expected to bolster their ambition to challenge the top teams like Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari.

Newey’s departure from Red Bull marks the end of an era, as he was integral to the team’s success, including their dominance in recent years with Max Verstappen. While Newey’s move to Aston Martin is set, it’s clear that Mercedes, despite considering him, is focused on nurturing their own technical capabilities without external additions at this point.

This insight into Wolff’s mindset highlights his long-term vision for Mercedes, which prioritizes stability and trust in the team’s existing talents. While the prospect of having a legendary figure like Newey on board would intrigue any top team, Wolff’s decision to rely on his current team underscores Mercedes’ confidence in their ability to compete at the highest level without a major overhaul.

As Newey prepares to step into his new role at Aston Martin, the F1 world will be watching closely to see how this shift impacts the balance of power among the top teams.
