Sir Jackie Stewart pinpoints one thing that’s unusual about Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari…read more.

Sir Jackie Stewart has shared his thoughts on Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari, labeling it as “unusual” given Hamilton’s age. The seven-time Formula One world champion, currently driving for Mercedes, is set to join Ferrari in 2025, at the age of 40. Stewart, a three-time champion himself, noted that such a significant career change typically happens earlier, usually when a driver is in their mid-20s or early 30s, not so late into their career.

In an appearance on the Racing News 365 podcast, Stewart acknowledged that while the timing of the switch is unconventional, he has no doubts about Hamilton’s ability to compete at the highest level with Ferrari. Referring to Hamilton’s victory at the British Grand Prix in July 2024, Stewart praised the 39-year-old’s racing prowess, suggesting that despite his age, Hamilton’s skill remains evident on the track. “It’s more difficult for him to do it at 40 years than it would have been if he had been 25 or 30,” Stewart said. “But he’s still got the skill, as is obvious at the present time, such as the British Grand Prix this year.”

Hamilton’s long-awaited move to Ferrari comes at a time when his career has already spanned over 17 years. He is set to join Charles Leclerc, who is 13 years his junior, forming what could be one of the most high-profile driver pairings in the sport. While Hamilton’s career is clearly nearing its twilight, Stewart understands his decision to continue racing, even as he approaches 40. “It’s unusual,” Stewart admitted, “but at some point, he has to retire as a racing driver, and he feels that time has not yet arrived. And I can understand that.”

Hamilton’s Ferrari move will undoubtedly spark debates about whether he can still deliver consistent top results as he faces younger competitors. Currently sitting sixth in the Drivers’ Championship standings with 174 points, Hamilton is 71 points behind his future Ferrari teammate Leclerc and 19 points ahead of his current teammate, George Russell. Despite the questions about his longevity, Hamilton is confident in his abilities and believes he is in better form now than when he first entered the sport.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Hamilton reflected on how much he has evolved as a driver since his debut in 2007. “I’m in such a good place, physically and mentally,” he said. “My reaction times are still quicker than the young guys. I think I’m a better driver than I was at 22.” He added that while his younger self was driven by energy and ruthlessness, he lacked the finesse, balance, and leadership skills that he now possesses. “Being a good racing driver, it’s not just about being fast, it’s about being the most rounded,” he said, emphasizing the maturity and experience he has gained over the years.

Hamilton’s impending move to Ferrari signals the start of a new chapter in his storied career, one that could see him continue to defy expectations and challenge for more victories, even as he approaches 40.
