In a rare emotional update, Corinna Schumacher, the wife of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, gave insight into her husband’s condition in a 2021 Netflix documentary. Since Michael’s tragic skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013, where he suffered life-altering brain injuries, the Schumacher family has kept his health largely private. Very few people are fully aware of the extent of his condition, making any update from the family a significant moment for fans and the public alike.

Michael Schumacher, a seven-time Formula 1 world champion, sustained his injuries after hitting his head on a rock while skiing in Meribel, France. Although he was wearing a helmet, the impact was severe enough to cause critical damage. He was placed in a medically induced coma for several months, and since being brought home, the Schumacher family has fiercely protected his privacy, allowing little to no information to be shared with the public.

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, one of the few individuals close to Schumacher, provided a rare update in 2022 to the French newspaper L’Equipe. Todt, who worked with Schumacher for over a decade, shared his perspective on Schumacher’s current state, saying, “Michael is here, so I don’t miss him. Corinna, who has taken on the role of her husband’s primary protector, explained her decision to maintain such strict privacy around his condition. In the Netflix documentary Schumacher, she reiterated Michael’s long-standing belief that “private is private,” and that the family has carried on with their lives in this way. “It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible,” she said. “Michael always protected us, and now we are protecting Michael.”

Corinna also touched on the emotional toll of the situation, sharing the deep sense of loss that has come from Michael’s changed condition. “I miss Michael every day, but it’s not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him,” she said in the documentary. “Everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here—different, but here. He still shows me how strong he is every day.”

She went on to discuss how, despite the heartbreak, she has never blamed anyone or anything for what happened. “I have never blamed God for what happened. It was just really bad luck— all the bad luck anyone can have in life,” Corinna reflected. “It’s always terrible when you say, ‘Why is this happening to
