Lewis Hamilton to Honor Ayrton Senna with Special Tribute at Brazilian GP
Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton is set for an emotional moment at the Brazilian Grand Prix, where he will drive Ayrton Senna’s championship-winning McLaren MP4/5B in a tribute to his racing hero. This demonstration, scheduled at the iconic Interlagos circuit on Saturday following qualifying, celebrates Senna’s lasting influence on Formula 1, marking 30 years since the Brazilian legend’s passing.
Hamilton, a longtime admirer of Senna, has shared how deeply the Brazilian’s legacy has impacted his own career. Senna’s tragic death in 1994 left an indelible mark on Hamilton, who was just nine years old and newly inspired to pursue a career in racing. Recalling those early days, Hamilton expressed his excitement and disbelief at the chance to drive Senna’s car in Brazil, a circuit where the legendary driver achieved iconic moments, including his victory while holding the Brazilian flag aloft.
Reflecting on the upcoming drive, Hamilton said, “I never in a million years thought I’d get to drive Senna’s car here. When my manager told me about it, I jumped at the opportunity. Back in the day, when I was at McLaren, I had a chance to drive the MP4/4 at Silverstone, and that was an incredible experience.”
Hamilton, who will join Ferrari in 2025, sees this tribute as a meaningful return to his roots with McLaren, where he began his Formula 1 career in 2007. He plans to make the moment even more special with a custom helmet modeled after Senna’s, and he initially hoped to keep his tribute a surprise with an all-white suit and Senna’s iconic helmet, creating a nostalgic scene for fans. However, news of the tribute spread, and Hamilton shared his thoughts, adding, “It’s impossible to keep things quiet!”
Senna remains an enduring figure in F1 history, particularly at Interlagos, where his success is cherished by Brazilian fans. Hamilton’s tribute will not only honor Senna’s legacy but also celebrate a personal connection to one of the sport’s greatest icons. For Hamilton, this drive represents a full-circle moment, paying homage to the driver who inspired him to pursue his own legendary career.
