Charles Leclerc Fined by FIA for Inappropriate Language at Mexico City Grand Prix
The FIA has fined Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc for using inappropriate language during the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend. The governing body emphasized the importance of respectful behavior, noting that Formula 1 drivers are seen as “role models both inside and outside the sport.”
Apology and Mitigating Factors
The FIA stewards acknowledged that Leclerc’s language was not directed at any individual or group and that he promptly apologized after the incident. They cited his quick apology as a mitigating factor in their decision to issue only a fine rather than a harsher penalty. The stewards noted that Leclerc’s infraction was less severe compared to a recent case involving Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
Verstappen’s Reaction and Prior Incident
During the Thursday news conference ahead of the São Paulo Grand Prix, Verstappen referred to his own previous punishment for inappropriate language and commented on Leclerc’s case. Reflecting on criticism he receives, Verstappen said, “People that are objective and close to me and not just there to stir… I can’t say the word because I’ll probably get another [community service punishment].”
Verstappen, who received a community service punishment for his comments at an earlier press conference, expressed his frustration with the perceived inconsistency in penalties. He remarked, “Apparently, it only counts for me anyway because after the race in Mexico, someone was swearing. I didn’t hear anything from it, so it’s better I don’t swear again.”
FIA’s Emphasis on Professionalism
The FIA has been clear in its stance on professionalism, especially in how drivers conduct themselves in public settings. While the organization seeks to maintain standards, the recent series of penalties has sparked discussions within the F1 community regarding consistent enforcement across all drivers.
