Max Verstappen at Risk of Race Ban Amid Rising Tension with…read more
Max Verstappen’s Formula 1 title defense could face a serious setback as he edges closer to a potential race ban. After accumulating six penalty points on his FIA super license due to recent on-track incidents, Verstappen’s championship lead may be in jeopardy. Following a tense Mexico City Grand Prix, Verstappen’s aggressive moves against McLaren’s Lando Norris added two penalty points to his license, intensifying pressure as he navigates the final stages of the season.
The controversy began when Verstappen, starting alongside pole-sitter Carlos Sainz, engaged in a fierce battle with Norris. In an attempt to defend his position, Verstappen forced Norris wide twice, leading stewards to impose two separate 10-second time penalties on the Dutch driver. These penalties saw Verstappen drop to sixth place, trimming his championship lead over Norris to 47 points.
This incident follows another tense exchange between the two drivers just a week earlier at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. There, Norris was penalized for overtaking Verstappen off-track, highlighting the competitive tension between the two. Now, with Verstappen penalized for similar tactics, both drivers are under close scrutiny as the season nears its conclusion.
Under the FIA’s penalty points system, any driver accumulating 12 points within 12 months faces a one-race ban. Verstappen’s current six points place him halfway to that threshold, and he must exercise caution to avoid further penalties. This season has already seen Kevin Magnussen of Haas reach 12 points, leading to a one-race suspension. Only Fernando Alonso has a higher tally than Verstappen, currently sitting at eight points.
For Verstappen, a race ban would have significant consequences, not only reducing his points tally but also opening up a crucial opportunity for his competitors, particularly Norris. With a shrinking lead and increased scrutiny from the stewards, Verstappen’s title campaign now carries an extra layer of risk.
The penalty points system, introduced by the FIA in 2014, aims to discourage aggressive driving and promote safer racing. Few drivers have reached the 12-point threshold, but Verstappen’s ongoing clash with Norris may put him at risk of joining that list if further incidents occur.
As the season progresses, Verstappen will need to balance his aggressive style with caution to avoid jeopardizing his championship lead.
