Mercedes and Hamilton Eye Late-Season Redemption as F1 Campaign Winds Down
Lewis Hamilton’s final season with Mercedes has been far from the grand farewell many anticipated. Once expected to be a fitting swan song for the seven-time world champion, 2024 has instead been his most challenging year in Formula 1. While there have been bright spots—most notably his emotional victory at Silverstone and a strong performance in Spa—recent struggles in Austin, Mexico, and Brazil have overshadowed those successes. With just three races left in the season, Hamilton and Mercedes find themselves searching for redemption.
Throughout the season, Hamilton’s Mercedes W15 has struggled to compete with front-runners Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari. The team has been left trailing in “no man’s land,” unable to challenge for victories consistently. Despite these setbacks, Hamilton’s career has been defined by resilience, and he will be determined not to end his tenure with Mercedes on a low note. The upcoming races in Las Vegas, Qatar, and Abu Dhabi offer one last opportunity for both driver and team to turn things around.
However, Mercedes’ trackside engineering director, Andrew Shovlin, has tempered expectations for a late-season resurgence. Speaking to Motorsport.com, Shovlin acknowledged the team’s difficulties, emphasizing the focus on learning from this season’s struggles to improve next year’s car. “Our focus has very much shifted to understanding what we need to apply to next year,” he said. While these comments may not inspire confidence in a dramatic comeback, they also relieve pressure on the team to perform in the remaining races, which could work to their advantage.
Unlike their rivals, Mercedes is not embroiled in championship battles in the drivers’ or constructors’ standings. This freedom from title pressure might allow them to exploit potential clashes between Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren, all of whom remain in fierce competition. Nevertheless, Hamilton’s recent difficulties at Interlagos highlight the steep challenge ahead. Extracting maximum performance from the W15 has proven elusive, raising questions about whether a turnaround is even possible.
For inspiration, Hamilton could look to his own words. November 15 marks the anniversary of his seventh world title, a victory achieved under adverse conditions at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix. Reflecting on that milestone, Hamilton shared a message of perseverance: “Nothing is impossible. A driving force for me has been to set an example for the next generation, to never give up on your dreams. I was told by many that my dream was impossible, yet here I am. I want you to know that you can do it too. Never give up, keep fighting, and let’s keep rising to the occasion.”
These words could serve as a rallying cry for both Hamilton and Mercedes in the final races of the season. Drawing on the spirit of past triumphs, Hamilton has an opportunity to lead his team to a strong finish, even in the face of adversity. While the odds of a victory may be slim, the chance to demonstrate resilience and determination could set the stage for a fitting end to Hamilton’s Mercedes career.
As the Formula 1 season approaches its conclusion, Hamilton and Mercedes may yet find a way to defy expectations. Whether through strategy, skill, or sheer determination, the partnership that has defined a generation of the sport will look to end on a high note.
