The FIA has confirmed a significant development for Mercedes, announcing that the team will expand into another motorsport discipline starting in 2025. While the Mercedes Formula 1 team has struggled to replicate its former dominance, the move highlights the manufacturer’s ambition to diversify its motorsport endeavors.
Mercedes’ Formula 1 team, which once reigned supreme with eight consecutive Constructors’ Championships, has faced a steep decline in recent years. The 2024 season has been a mixed bag for the Brackley-based outfit. Despite securing three race victories—their best tally since 2021—they have earned just one podium in the last seven races. This inconsistency leaves them a distant fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.
The departure of seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton at the end of the season adds to the team’s challenges. Hamilton is set to join Ferrari, delivering a major blow to Mercedes as they work to rebuild their F1 fortunes. However, the German automaker appears poised to adapt by focusing on long-term talent development and exploring other motorsport opportunities.
Mercedes to Compete in WEC
In a surprising turn, Mercedes has announced plans to enter the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2025. This marks their return to endurance racing, a move likely aimed at giving their rising stars valuable competitive experience. Among the talents in Mercedes’ stable are Mick Schumacher, Frederik Vesti (2023 Formula 2 runner-up), and Kimi Antonelli, who will join the F1 team full-time in 2025.
Schumacher, currently racing in the WEC for Alpine, could become a key figure in Mercedes’ WEC campaign. The team will compete in the LMGT3 class in partnership with Iron Lynx, using the Mercedes-AMG GT3 as their vehicle of choice. The collaboration with Iron Lynx, known for their expertise in GT racing, promises a strong foundation for Mercedes’ success in the series.
While the WEC endeavor is a fresh chapter, Mercedes’ involvement in Formula 1 remains robust. Starting in 2026, Alpine will use Mercedes engines, signaling the team’s continued influence within the sport.
The FIA World Endurance Championship confirmed the news through its official X account, sparking excitement among motorsport fans. As Mercedes diversifies its racing portfolio, the move underscores its commitment to fostering young talent and competing across multiple disciplines.
