Christian Horner Launches Explosive Rant Against Toto Wolff, Reigniting F1 Rivalry
Christian Horner has launched a fierce verbal attack on his long-time Formula 1 rival Toto Wolff, reigniting their public feud. The Red Bull team principal has criticized Wolff, accusing him of making disparaging comments despite previously thanking Horner for his support in a personal matter.
Horner and Wolff’s rivalry stems from the highly competitive 2021 Formula 1 season when their respective teams, Red Bull and Mercedes, were locked in a fierce battle for the championship. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen eventually won the title under controversial circumstances in Abu Dhabi, narrowly beating Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton. The contentious ending of that season only deepened the rivalry between the two team bosses.
The latest spat erupted after Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, made comments regarding his wife, Susie Wolff, who serves as the F1 Academy chief. She was recently placed under investigation by the FIA, but the allegations against her were dismissed following support from all ten Formula 1 teams. Wolff had previously thanked Horner for defending Susie Wolff during that time, yet his recent remarks appear to contradict that sentiment.
In an explosive interview with the Daily Mail, Horner expressed his frustration at Wolff’s contradictory behavior, accusing the Austrian of stirring unnecessary drama. “Toto sent me a text message at the end of last year to say thank you for standing up for Susie today and showing them that there is a red line and the teams are together,” Horner explained. “And I said, ‘No problem, I said what I believe.’”
Horner went on to say that he was confused by Wolff’s recent comments, which seemed to go against the spirit of the gratitude shown in the past. “So why he needs to go and say all that s*** this week, I have no idea. I was a little surprised to see his comments because he thanked me for his support,” Horner said.
The Red Bull boss further revealed that he has refrained from engaging in the public back-and-forth, despite repeated provocations from Wolff and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. “I have not said one word. I have not risen to Zak’s bait. I have not risen to Toto’s bait,” Horner insisted. “I’ve had him chasing our drivers. I have had them chasing our sponsors. I have just thought, ‘Let them get on with it.’”
Horner suggested that Wolff should be more concerned with the internal problems at Mercedes, rather than focusing on Red Bull or other teams. “I think Toto has got more than enough of his own issues to be focused on with his own team’s performance rather than worrying about me,” he added.
Horner also recalled the difficult start to the season, where he felt rival teams, including Mercedes, tried to take advantage of Red Bull’s challenges. He pointed to what he viewed as opportunistic behavior from Wolff when Red Bull was facing struggles early in the year. “When I was down, Toto came after me. So did others. They tried everything, for their own gain,” Horner reflected. “It is a competitive business, and I get it.”
He referenced Mercedes’ struggles in maintaining driver stability as an example of Wolff’s focus on Red Bull instead of dealing with his own team’s issues. “Toto had lost his driver to Ferrari a month earlier, and he was telling the world that wasn’t happening. He seemed to be the last person to find out about it,” Horner remarked.
The heated comments from Horner underscore the continuing tension between the two high-profile team principals. Although both Red Bull and Mercedes have focused on their own performances, this latest exchange suggests that their rivalry—both on and off the track—shows no sign of cooling down anytime soon. As Formula 1 continues to deliver high-stakes drama, the intense rivalry between Horner and Wolff remains one of the sport’s most compelling narratives.
