F1 drivers stung by NEW rule as FIA investigation launched at Qatar Grand Prix
The FIA has introduced a new mandatory rule for drivers at the Qatar Grand Prix, part of Formula 1’s 2024 season, in an effort to address concerns about excessively slow driving during qualifying sessions.
This rule, aimed at ensuring safety and fairness, requires drivers to adhere to a minimum lap time during certain qualifying and reconnaissance laps.
The decision comes after ongoing discussions throughout the season about drivers deliberately slowing down to create space for their hot laps, leading to chaotic moments and on-track disputes.
The new regulation was announced by Rui Marques, the recently appointed F1 race director, and will be enforced during the sprint qualifying session, main race qualifying, and reconnaissance laps.
Drivers must complete laps within a set minimum time of 1:40.0 between the safety car lines indicated on the pit lane diagram. Failure to comply will result in penalties.
This measure is expected to minimize congestion and reduce dangerous behavior, such as drivers racing each other to secure an ideal position for a hot lap.
The Qatar Grand Prix weekend, a sprint event, features a packed schedule with the sprint qualifying session held on Friday, followed by the sprint race and main race qualifying on Saturday.
With just two races left in the 2024 season, much of the attention is focused on the constructors’ championship battle.
McLaren leads the standings, 24 points ahead of Ferrari, while defending champions Red Bull are in third, trailing McLaren by 53 points.
This marks McLaren’s best chance to secure their first constructors’ title since 1998.
