FIA summon Mercedes over pit…read more
Mercedes has been called to comply with a pit-lane regulation by Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, ahead of the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix. The Lusail International Circuit is set to host the season’s penultimate race, promising intense battles on and off the track.
Fresh off a stunning one-two finish in Las Vegas, Mercedes aims to carry momentum into Qatar. George Russell claimed his second win of the season, with teammate Lewis Hamilton delivering a masterful drive from 10th to secure second place. Despite the Nevada triumph, the Brackley-based team faces a disappointing season overall, finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship standings.
This weekend, all eyes are not just on the track but also on compliance with FIA protocols. The FIA selected Mercedes’ car number 63, driven by Russell, for inspection and presentation in its pit-stop position. According to the FIA’s official guidelines, teams must display one car in the pit lane and another inside the garage for media viewing. The car presented must feature any major aerodynamic or bodywork updates intended for the competition if such updates are available.
Russell’s Mercedes will join Pierre Gasly’s Alpine and Alex Albon’s Williams in the display lineup. This practice provides the media with an up-close view of the cars, offering opportunities for detailed photography and footage before the racing action begins. The inspection is set between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM local time (12:00 PM to 1:00 PM GMT) on Friday, marking a standard pre-race procedure for the sport.
While Mercedes addresses this off-track matter, focus will also remain on the fierce fight for second place in the Constructors’ Championship. McLaren and Ferrari are locked in a tight battle, with just 24 points separating them as the season nears its conclusion.
Meanwhile, Max Verstappen arrives in Qatar as a four-time world champion, having secured his title during the Las Vegas GP. As fans gear up for another thrilling weekend, the 2024 season has delivered its share of surprises and rivalries, setting the stage for a dramatic finale.
Tickets for the final races are still available, offering fans the chance to witness the excitement live. Alternatively, enthusiasts can plan ahead for the 2025 season to catch all the action firsthand.
