FIA announce last-minute Hamilton change as investigation launched at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
The FIA has announced a late modification to Lewis Hamilton’s car ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
Mercedes confirmed they replaced the gearbox assembly on Hamilton’s W15 for the first two practice sessions.
This marks the third time such a change has been made this season under the restricted-number-components (RNC) regulation, avoiding a penalty.
The race at Yas Marina Circuit will be Hamilton’s last with Mercedes, concluding a remarkable 12-year partnership.
The seven-time world champion has already confirmed a move to Ferrari for the 2025 season, where he hopes to secure a record-breaking eighth title and cement his legacy as the most successful F1 driver in history.
Hamilton has had a challenging 2024 season despite two victories at Silverstone and Spa, which brought his career win total to 105.
He currently sits seventh in the drivers’ standings, trailing behind teammate George Russell, who has outqualified him in 18 of the 23 races so far.
This represents a noticeable decline in form for the 39-year-old.
Despite the struggles, Hamilton aims to finish his Mercedes career on a high note at Abu Dhabi.
The gearbox change was intended to optimize performance for his final outing with the team.
As Mercedes navigates a difficult season, Hamilton’s move to Ferrari signals a new chapter in his illustrious career.
