Norris Leads McLaren to Constructors’ Title at Abu Dhabi GP as Hamilton Shines in Farewell
Lando Norris delivered a sensational victory at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, securing McLaren the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship.
The Briton’s dominant performance saw him fend off the Ferrari duo of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, who completed the podium in second and third, respectively.
Norris’ 25-point haul proved decisive, sealing McLaren’s triumph.
The race began in dramatic fashion. Max Verstappen collided with Oscar Piastri at the first corner, spinning the Australian and earning Verstappen a 10-second penalty.
Piastri recovered to finish 10th. The chaos continued as Sergio Perez was spun by Valtteri Bottas later in the opening lap, forcing the Red Bull driver to retire early.
Bottas, involved in another collision with Kevin Magnussen, also retired.
Lewis Hamilton stole the spotlight with a heroic final performance for Mercedes.
Starting 16th on the grid, the seven-time world champion carved his way through the field to finish fourth, overtaking teammate George Russell on the last lap after erasing a 14-second gap in the closing stages.
This marked an emotional end to his remarkable 12-year stint with the team.
Ferrari enjoyed a strong outing, with Sainz and Leclerc securing vital points to cement their position in the standings.
Red Bull endured a disappointing race, as Perez’s retirement compounded Verstappen’s penalized run to sixth place.
Other highlights included Pierre Gasly finishing seventh for Alpine and Nico Hulkenberg achieving an impressive eighth for Haas.
Fernando Alonso claimed ninth for Aston Martin, while Piastri completed the top 10 in his McLaren despite the early setback.
It was a tough farewell for several drivers leaving the grid. Bottas and Magnussen both retired after collisions, while Franco Colapinto, ending his stint with Williams, suffered a technical failure.
