F1 star hit with EXISTENTIAL FIA penalty after Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
The FIA imposed a penalty on Valtteri Bottas after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, despite uncertainty over whether he will ever serve it.
The 2024 Formula 1 season concluded with an action-packed race at Yas Marina Circuit, capping the sport’s longest calendar year.
During the race, the champion received a 10-second time penalty for an incident, which was served during a pit stop.
Oscar Piastri was also penalized for causing a collision with Franco Colapinto, which led to the latter’s retirement from the race.
The incident marked a disappointing end for Colapinto in his final appearance for Williams, and his return to the grid remains unconfirmed.
The race was the final outing for several drivers, including Kevin Magnussen and Valtteri Bottas, neither of whom secured seats for the 2025 season.
Bottas, driving for Sauber, was involved in a collision with Magnussen that ended his race prematurely.
Because of his retirement, Bottas was unable to serve his penalty during the event.
Instead, the FIA carried it over, issuing him a five-place grid drop for the next race he competes in, along with three penalty points on his Super Licence.
With Bottas not participating in the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, he will avoid serving the penalty.
Sauber will field Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hülkenberg next season, while Bottas is rumored to be transitioning to a reserve driver role with Mercedes.
