George Russell Hails Lewis Hamilton’s Role Model Legacy After Abu Dhabi Finale

George Russell has expressed his admiration for Lewis Hamilton, highlighting the seven-time world champion’s role model qualities as his most enduring memory of their partnership. Reflecting on their time together, Russell praised Hamilton’s leadership and resilience, especially during their final race as teammates at Mercedes in Abu Dhabi.

Hamilton’s 12-year stint with Mercedes ended on a bittersweet note as he prepares to join Ferrari for the 2025 season. While the team organized various celebrations to honor Hamilton’s unprecedented success with the Silver Arrows, the weekend seemed to falter after a disappointing qualifying session.

In Q1, Hamilton’s session was derailed when a loose bollard, dislodged by Kevin Magnussen, struck his car. The incident left the Mercedes star unable to progress beyond the first round of qualifying, leaving the team disheartened. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted the team’s mistake in not sending Hamilton out earlier to avoid such risks, calling it an “inexcusable, idiotic mistake.”

Despite the setback, Hamilton’s response epitomized his never-say-die attitude. Following the frustrating session, the 39-year-old worked to lift his team’s spirits during the debrief. His words motivated the crew, and Hamilton delivered a masterclass during the race, climbing from 16th to finish fourth. For Russell, this moment encapsulated Hamilton’s ability to inspire and lead by example.

“It’s been great, to be honest,” Russell said. “As painful as these three years have been at times, seeing all of these memories reminds the team that we can achieve greatness again. We still have the same team that was there during Lewis’ glory years.”

Russell recounted how Hamilton’s pep talk after the disappointing qualifying session brought a sense of perspective to the team. “After qualifying, everyone had their head in their hands, but Lewis reminded us to stand tall. He told us not to forget the pole positions and victories we’ve achieved together. That’s just who he is – always lifting people up,” Russell said.

Reflecting on his experience working alongside his childhood idol, Russell emphasized how much he has learned from Hamilton’s conduct both on and off the track.

“What stands out most to me is seeing firsthand what a true role model he is,” Russell said. “Lewis has shown me the importance of using our platform responsibly. Whether it’s how you handle victories or cope with losses, you’re inspiring the next generation. It’s become even more apparent to me as I see my young niece and nephews watching us on TikTok, YouTube, and Netflix.”

Russell recalled a personal moment that highlighted Hamilton’s influence on young fans. “I think back to the photo I had with Lewis as a kid. I looked up to him in the same way so many kids look up to us now. That’s been the biggest life lesson for me – understanding the importance of how you express yourself when millions are watching,” he said.

The Abu Dhabi finale was a fitting conclusion to Hamilton’s rollercoaster 2024 campaign and his time with Mercedes. Despite the challenges, Hamilton’s attitude, determination, and ability to inspire left an indelible mark on Russell and the entire team.

As Mercedes bids farewell to one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history, Russell reflected on the legacy Hamilton leaves behind. “It’s been a very nice way to finish this season,” he said, underscoring the respect and gratitude he holds for his legendary teammate.
