Perez lands NEW drive as Red Bull reveal contract regret
Sergio Perez has secured a new role with Red Bull, despite ongoing uncertainty about his Formula 1 future.
The Mexican driver’s position at the team has been under scrutiny following a series of underwhelming performances in the 2024 season.
Red Bull bosses are set to meet during the winter break to decide whether Perez will continue with the team.
Perez has remained optimistic about Red Bull honoring his contract into the next season and beyond.
However, doubts emerged after his disappointing DNF result at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Team principal Christian Horner has since expressed regret over extending Perez’s contract early in the season, a decision that failed to yield the expected results.
During the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, Horner explained the reasoning behind the early extension.
“At the time, Sergio was performing very well, securing four podiums in the first five races,” Horner said.
“To maintain his confidence and momentum, we decided to extend his contract early. Unfortunately, it didn’t work as we hoped.”
While Red Bull has yet to officially announce Perez’s future in the team, he recently unveiled a new driving venture linked to the organization.
In a video shared on his Instagram, Perez showcased his experience testing the Ford Raptor T1+, an off-road vehicle designed for the Dakar Rally.
Powered by a V8 engine, the Raptor T1+ is a collaboration between Red Bull and Ford, marking a partnership expected to extend into Formula 1.
Ford is set to join Red Bull in developing a next-generation power unit for the team, beginning in 2026.
Red Bull remains noncommittal about Perez’s involvement in this future partnership, as they consider other options for their 2025 driver lineup.
Junior drivers Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda are reportedly in the mix to replace Perez.
Despite the uncertainty, Perez’s collaboration with Red Bull on the Raptor T1+ hints at continued ties with the team beyond his F1 career.
