Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton delivered a touching tribute to fellow champion Sebastian Vettel ahead of his departure from Mercedes. Hamilton’s announcement in February 2024 stunned the sports world, revealing that after 12 successful years with the Silver Arrows, he would be leaving the team to join Ferrari in 2025. This marked a significant shift, as Hamilton followed in the footsteps of his friend and former rival, Vettel, who had a successful stint with the Scuderia from 2015 to 2020.
Vettel, who partnered with Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari until 2019, had a distinguished career, securing four world titles with Red Bull Racing before making the move to Ferrari. He eventually departed the team at the end of 2020, after failing to win a championship with the team. Hamilton, who now replaces the German in the Ferrari lineup, is set to team up with Charles Leclerc, just as Vettel once did.
Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes, where he enjoyed tremendous success, marks the end of one of the most remarkable partnerships in Formula 1 history. Over 12 years, Hamilton and team principal Toto Wolff led Mercedes to an unprecedented 14 titles across the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, making them the most successful pairing in F1’s history. Despite the struggles in his final season with the team, Hamilton is set to begin a new chapter with Ferrari, a move that has garnered much anticipation.
As part of his farewell to Mercedes, Hamilton has taken part in a series of goodbye speeches during his tour to locations such as Kuala Lumpur, Stuttgart, Brixworth, and Brackley. In one of these emotional moments, Hamilton reflected on his admiration for Vettel, calling him the “best world champion” he knows. The 39-year-old praised Vettel not only for his driving skills but also for his character, describing him as someone with “real passion” who is “empathetic” and “cares for people.”
Hamilton’s heartfelt words also touched on Vettel’s activism, particularly his efforts outside of F1 to raise awareness about climate change and promote equality within the sport. Hamilton recognized that Vettel, like himself, has used his platform to advocate for positive change. “He’s actually the only other one that’s tried to utilize his platform for something good,” Hamilton admitted.
Hamilton’s admiration for Vettel extends beyond their rivalry on the track. He acknowledged the deep respect they share, noting that while their racing battles were fierce, their moments together on the track were some of the best of his career. “It doesn’t matter how good he drives, because he’s so quick anyway, we had great races together,” Hamilton reflected. “But I think for me, we had the best races together.”
Hamilton’s heartfelt tribute to Vettel highlights the mutual respect and admiration that exists between the two, not just as competitors, but as individuals who have used their platforms to drive positive change in the world.
