Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan has advised Ferrari to reconsider its decision to sign Lewis Hamilton, urging the Italian team to find a way out of the contract following a disappointing 2024 season for the seven-time world champion. Jordan expressed concern after hearing Hamilton admit that he was “not fast enough anymore,” which he believes signals a lack of self-confidence. He suggested that if Hamilton no longer believed in his abilities, Ferrari should terminate the deal, emphasizing that without full belief in oneself, success would be unattainable.
Jordan also offered some advice to Hamilton, suggesting that the 39-year-old should retire with pride while preserving his legacy. He reminded Hamilton that there are other passions beyond racing, like music and fashion, and that it might be the right time to walk away from the sport, despite the financial rewards still on the table. Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes for Ferrari in 2025 came as a shock to many, as it marked the end of a long-standing partnership with the German team. The move was partly driven by his childhood dream of racing for Ferrari, as well as the desire for a fresh challenge after Mercedes’ decline in performance following their dominance in the early 2020s.
Despite his new deal with Ferrari, Hamilton’s 2024 season has been marked by a lack of consistent form. His victory at the British Grand Prix was his first win after a 900-day drought, and he followed it up with a win at the Belgian Grand Prix, benefiting from a disqualification of his teammate, George Russell. However, as the season progressed, Hamilton struggled with the performance of the Mercedes W15 and was frequently outpaced by his younger teammate in qualifying sessions. This left him looking visibly disappointed and drained toward the end of the year.
Ralf Schumacher, a former F1 driver, has also voiced concerns about Hamilton’s future with Ferrari. Schumacher believes that if Hamilton loses the hunger to win, he might not live up to the expectations set by both himself and the team. Given that Hamilton’s deal with Ferrari officially begins in 2025, there is speculation about whether he will follow through with his commitment if his passion for the sport wanes. Currently, Hamilton is still completing his Mercedes farewell tour, postponing his post-season testing in Abu Dhabi. He is expected to take some time off before officially beginning his new chapter with Ferrari in the upcoming season.
