McLaren issue statement as long-serving engineer leaves team

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has praised long-serving engineer Hiroshi Imai as he prepares to leave the team following the conclusion of the F1 2024 season.

McLaren enjoyed a triumphant year, securing their first Constructors’ Championship since 1998.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri delivered a combined six race victories, with Norris’s win at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix helping McLaren narrowly edge Ferrari by 14 points to claim the title.

Imai, a highly respected figure within McLaren, is set to depart after a remarkable 15-year tenure.

He originally joined the team in 2009 from Bridgestone, F1’s tyre supplier at the time.

Over the years, Imai steadily rose through the ranks, becoming chief race engineer in 2017 and later director of race engineering in 2021.

Most recently, he held the position of director of tyres and brakes, where his expertise proved invaluable.

Describing Imai’s influence, Stella highlighted his vast technical knowledge, particularly in tyres and brakes, as well as his calm demeanor and organizational skills.

Stella emphasized that Imai had been a trusted mentor and source of wisdom for team members throughout his time at McLaren.

He fondly noted Imai’s competitive spirit, referring to the Japanese engineer’s “Samurai” mindset during races, balancing toughness with integrity and respect.

Stella expressed gratitude for Imai’s contributions, adding that it was fitting for him to conclude his McLaren career on a high note as part of a World Championship-winning team.

Imai, who is expected to return to Japan, leaves behind a legacy of dedication and professionalism, earning admiration across the organization.

In the wake of Imai’s departure, McLaren has been strengthening its leadership team.

In September, the Woking-based squad secured Red Bull’s highly regarded strategy chief, Will Courtenay, as their future sporting director.

Courtenay, who spent 14 years at Red Bull, will officially join McLaren no later than mid-2026.

His arrival follows the recruitment of Rob Marshall, a key architect of Red Bull’s recent success, who joined McLaren ahead of the 2024 season.

These appointments reflect McLaren’s intent to build on their championship success and solidify their competitiveness for the coming years.

Meanwhile, Stella reaffirmed Imai’s lasting connection to the team, stating that he will forever be remembered as part of McLaren’s family.
