Max Verstappen has revealed surprising talks with Mercedes about a potential move during the 2024 Formula 1 season. The disclosure came amidst a challenging period for his current team, Red Bull. The team faced internal issues, including an investigation into team principal Christian Horner for alleged inappropriate behavior towards a female colleague. Although Horner was cleared, the controversy led to calls for his resignation from Verstappen’s father, Jos.
On top of these internal tensions, Red Bull’s performance on the track declined, with the team slipping behind rivals McLaren and Ferrari. The departures of key figures like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley also added to the uncertainty surrounding Red Bull’s future. These issues prompted rumors about Verstappen’s potential departure, especially as Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff publicly courted the Dutch driver.
Despite these rumors, Verstappen, whose contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, has consistently denied plans to leave. However, he confirmed that discussions with Wolff did occur during the season. “You always talk to each other, and I’m not lying that we sat together. That in itself is not a problem either,” Verstappen said in an interview with Viaplay. He reassured fans that he remains happy with his current team.
Verstappen’s contract is believed to include an exit clause, which might have allowed for a move, but he has firmly stated his commitment to Red Bull. His dominant performance in the 2024 season, which included securing the drivers’ title, helped stabilize his position at the team, particularly after the internal issues were resolved.
Though speculation about his future continued, Verstappen’s latest statements suggest that, for now, he is focused on continuing to dominate Formula 1 with Red Bull and has no immediate plans for a change.
