Excited Lawson reacts to Red Bull promotion as he details discussions with Horner and outlines his goal

Liam Lawson has shared his excitement and reaction to the announcement that he will join Red Bull Racing as a full-time driver in 2025. The New Zealander reflected on the moment he learned about his promotion and revealed his ambitions as he prepares to compete alongside Max Verstappen.

The news comes following Red Bull’s decision to part ways with Sergio Perez on December 18, marking the end of a challenging season for the Mexican driver. Speculation about his replacement quickly followed, and just a day later, Red Bull confirmed that Lawson would take up the role. The 22-year-old has impressed the team during his substitute appearances in 2023 and 2024, earning him the coveted spot next to Verstappen.

Speaking on the Talking Bull podcast, Lawson expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “It’s very exciting. I still can’t quite believe it, but I’m just thrilled. I can’t stop smiling.”

When asked if the magnitude of the news had settled in, Lawson admitted that it hadn’t fully sunk in yet. “Honestly, no,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve had a chance to reflect because everything usually happens so quickly. When I was called up as a reserve in Zandvoort in 2023 after Daniel Ricciardo’s injury, it was a sudden situation. Similarly, my stint in Austin this year was something I knew about only two weeks prior. This time, I have the entire off-season to process and prepare.”

Lawson acknowledged the unusual feeling of having time to think about his upcoming challenge but welcomed the opportunity to ready himself for the next step in his career. “I don’t know if I like having this much time to dwell on it, though,” he joked. “I just want to get started! But it’s good because I can take the time to really let it sink in, prepare thoroughly, and come back strong and ready.”

The promotion caps off a remarkable rise for Lawson, who made a name for himself during his substitute appearances for Red Bull and AlphaTauri over the past two seasons. His ability to adapt quickly and deliver strong performances under pressure evidently caught the attention of team principal Christian Horner and other senior figures at Red Bull.

Lawson’s focus now turns to making the most of his opportunity and proving himself against Verstappen, the reigning world champion and one of Formula 1’s most dominant drivers. While acknowledging the significant challenge ahead, Lawson remains optimistic and determined to make an impact.

The move also represents a significant shift in Red Bull’s driver lineup as the team looks to maintain its dominance in Formula 1. Verstappen and Lawson will aim to build a strong partnership, with Lawson bringing fresh energy and talent to the team.

As Lawson prepares for the 2025 season, he is determined to use the off-season effectively to hone his skills and familiarize himself with the team. “It’s all about preparation now,” he said. “I want to come into the season as ready as I can be, both mentally and physically, to take on this incredible challenge.”

With his youthful enthusiasm and proven track record, Lawson’s journey as a Red Bull driver is set to be one of the most exciting storylines in Formula 1. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how the young talent performs alongside Verstappen on motorsport’s biggest stage.
