December 22, 2024
Williams driver Alex Albon has come to the defense of his teammate Franco Colapinto, who has faced criticism for his performance in the 2024 Formula 1 season. Despite Colapinto’s crashes in Brazil and Las Vegas, Albon believes that the Argentine driver’s skills and contributions to the team should not be overlooked.
In an interview with Motorsport, Albon praised Colapinto’s performance, particularly in Baku and Singapore, where he demonstrated his driving skills on challenging tracks. Albon acknowledged that the competition became more challenging as the season progressed, making it difficult to judge Colapinto’s performance accurately.
“I think it really goes in tandem with the performance of the car, and it became tricky at the end of the season,” Albon said. “It was tricky for me. I didn’t have a fantastic end of the season, and I don’t always just blame myself, so I think the team knows how good he is.”
Albon’s comments come as Colapinto’s future in F1 remains uncertain. Despite scoring five points and finishing 19th in the standings, Colapinto’s contract with Williams has not been renewed for the 2025 season.
However, Albon is confident that Colapinto will return to the F1 grid in the future. “He’s a fantastic driver. I feel like he’s proved his worth in Formula 1,” Albon said. “Definitely, when he joined, I underestimated just how quick he was going to be, and I believe we’ll see him in Formula 1 at some point in the future.”
The departure of Colapinto from Williams marks the end of an era for the team, which has undergone significant changes in recent years. As the team looks to rebuild and strengthen its lineup for the 2025 season, Albon’s comments serve as a testament to Colapinto’s skills and potential as a driver.
The F1 community will be watching with interest as Colapinto explores new opportunities and works towards his return to the grid. With his talent and determination, it’s likely that we’ll see him back in the driver’s seat soon.
