Just in..Despite securing 2 F1 wins, Oscar Piastri shares unfiltered feelings on more room for improvement
December 22, 2024
McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has reflected on his sophomore season in Formula 1, acknowledging that despite winning two races, he still has room for improvement. The 23-year-old Australian driver held his own against teammate Lando Norris throughout the 2024 season, showcasing consistency and finishing fourth in the driver’s standings.
However, Piastri was outscored and out-qualified by Norris on most occasions, failing to extract the maximum performance from the MCL38. In an interview with GPBlog, Piastri recognized the progress he made from his rookie season but emphasized the need for further improvement.
“I think a good improvement from my rookie season, but still room to go,” Piastri said. “I think a few races at the start of the season, a few races more recently have not gone as well as I would have liked. And I think also as a team, there are some races through the year that we would have liked to have executed a bit better.”
Piastri pinpointed qualifying as a key area for improvement ahead of the 2025 season. He struggled with inconsistency throughout the 2024 campaign, ultimately finishing with a 20-4 deficit in qualifying against Norris. While Norris secured eight pole positions, Piastri failed to achieve any.
The Australian driver’s two race wins came in Baku and Budapest, where he started from second place. Despite these victories, Piastri acknowledged that he made life difficult for himself in qualifying, often forcing him to fight back through the field.
“I think I showed some pretty clear progress from last season,” Piastri said. “I think mainly in qualifying, I’ve made life too difficult for myself this year, but I think last year in a lot of the races, I wouldn’t have had the tools to get back through. Whereas this year I feel like I have. So I think on a personal note, it’s been a good improvement, but still some room to go.”
As McLaren continues to make strides in the world of Formula 1, Piastri’s improvement will be crucial to the team’s success. With the 2025 season on the horizon, Piastri is poised to be a driver to watch, potentially contending for the driver’s championship alongside Norris.
Piastri’s middle phase of the season, from Austria to Singapore, was particularly impressive, as he consistently challenged for podiums and race wins against top teams like Mercedes and Ferrari. This upward trajectory suggests that Piastri could be a major player in the 2025 season.
As the F1 community looks ahead to the new season, all eyes will be on Oscar Piastri and his quest for improvement. Can he build on his sophomore success and become a genuine title contender? Only time will tell.
