F1 pundit and former team manager Eddie Jordan has slammed Ferrari’s decision to replace Carlos Sainz with Lewis Hamilton, calling it “absolutely suicidal.” This critique comes after Sainz’s impressive 2024 season, which saw him produce his best performance yet despite facing uncertainty about his future with the team.
Throughout the 2024 season, Sainz found himself in a precarious position. Even before the season began, it was clear that his time at Ferrari was likely coming to an end, especially after missing out on potential moves to Red Bull and Mercedes. Despite this, Sainz delivered standout performances, securing multiple Grand Prix victories, including his first-ever wins in Melbourne and Mexico City. He also finished just two points behind fourth-place Oscar Piastri in the Drivers’ Championship, even after missing a race due to appendicitis.
On the other hand, Hamilton faced one of the most challenging seasons of his illustrious career. Although he won two races, the Brit struggled in his battles with teammate George Russell, particularly in qualifying, where he trailed Russell 19-5 in head-to-head results. This performance led Hamilton to finish seventh in the Drivers’ Championship, marking the first time in his career that he had ended the year outside the top six.
Jordan, speaking on his “Formula For Success” podcast alongside David Coulthard, expressed disbelief at Ferrari’s decision to replace Sainz with Hamilton. He described it as a move that could backfire on Ferrari’s management, including team principal Fred Vasseur and chairman John Elkann. Jordan believes that they will ultimately regret their choice, given Sainz’s impressive form and Hamilton’s struggles in 2024.
This decision was one of the most surprising moments of the 2024 F1 season, according to Jordan, who nominated it as his “shock F1 moment” in the end-of-season awards segment of the podcast. He argued that, while Hamilton’s reputation and success are undeniable, Ferrari may be making a mistake in opting for him over the consistent and competitive Sainz, who demonstrated his ability to win races and perform at a high level despite the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team.
