Formula 1 has confirmed that the iconic Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps will remain part of the championship calendar for four additional races, extending its tenure until 2031. However, the race will adopt a new rotational system, meaning it will not feature on the schedule in 2028 and 2030.
The decision ensures Spa’s continued presence in the sport while accommodating F1’s growing global expansion and demand for new venues. The rotational system allows Formula 1 to balance tradition with the introduction of races in emerging markets, creating a more diverse calendar.
“We’re thrilled to secure Spa’s place on the calendar until 2031,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “Spa is a circuit with unparalleled history and a favorite for drivers and fans alike. The rotational system ensures we can maintain its legacy while exploring new opportunities around the world.”
The move to keep Spa in the lineup reflects its enduring popularity. Known for its dramatic layout, unpredictable weather, and rich history, the circuit has been a cornerstone of Formula 1 since its debut in 1950. However, recent concerns about safety upgrades and infrastructure improvements prompted discussions about its long-term future in the sport.
While some fans may be disappointed by its absence in 2028 and 2030, the inclusion of Spa through 2031 signals a commitment to preserving classic tracks in the face of an increasingly crowded calendar.
With this announcement, Formula 1 continues to strike a balance between honoring its storied past and embracing a global future, ensuring circuits like Spa remain integral to the sport’s identity.
