L 1 has announced a significant change regarding the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, which will now host races every other season instead of annually. This shift is part of a broader strategy to introduce a rotating race calendar, allowing for a more diverse selection of venues in the championship. McLaren’s CEO, Zak Brown, has expressed his support for this initiative, emphasizing the potential for growth within the sport.
Brown believes that a maximum of 24 Grand Prix weekends should be held each year. He proposes a structure where 20 races are fixed on the calendar while eight circuits rotate biannually. This plan aims to cater to the increasing demand for Formula 1 in various markets, with Brown suggesting that expanding to 28 different locations would be highly beneficial. However, he maintains that the number of races should not exceed 24 in a single season.
Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of Formula One Management, has also been acknowledged for his role in creating a balanced racing calendar. Brown commends Domenicali for his efforts but insists that maintaining a limit of 24 race weekends is essential for the well-being of everyone involved in the sport. He points out that with the current 24-race schedule, fatigue could become an issue for teams, drivers, and staff.
Brown emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the well-being of those within the sport. He highlights the necessity of evaluating the race calendar and exploring rotation options to ensure sustainability.
