Exclusive: Details of Lewis Hamilton’s First Formula 1 Test Revealed Ahead of Ferrari Debut

New details about Lewis Hamilton’s debut Formula 1 test have been shared by a former team member, offering a glimpse into the early stages of the British driver’s illustrious career.

Hamilton’s F1 journey began in 2007 with McLaren, where he quickly became a formidable presence, competing for a world title in his debut season. He secured his first championship in 2008, marking the start of what would become a dominant career in the sport. Over the next 12 years with Mercedes, Hamilton etched his name in F1 history, breaking records, including surpassing Michael Schumacher’s race victory record, and winning a total of seven world championships, matching Schumacher’s legendary feat.

Now, after an extraordinary spell with Mercedes, Hamilton is preparing for a new chapter with Ferrari. In a major career move, the 40-year-old has decided to join the Maranello team in 2025, where he will partner with former McLaren boss Fred Vasseur. Hamilton and Vasseur worked together in the GP2 series in 2006, when Hamilton won the championship. Their long-standing professional relationship is expected to bolster Hamilton’s transition into his new role at Ferrari.

Hamilton is scheduled to make his Ferrari debut in late January as part of the team’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme. This will serve as preparation before his first race for Ferrari at the Australian Grand Prix in March. The test will be crucial in helping Hamilton familiarize himself with Ferrari’s machinery and working style before stepping into a competitive race environment.

Matt Tait, who served as the trainer for Liam Lawson and worked closely with Hamilton in his early days with McLaren, has shared new insights about Hamilton’s first F1 tests. Tait, speaking exclusively with GPFans, recalled the young Hamilton’s initial demeanor during their time together in the mid-2000s.

“When I met him, he was quite a timid lad,” Tait explained. “He was just very focused on racing, always asking questions and seeking ways to improve. He was determined to understand every aspect of the sport and was always eager to learn.”

Tait’s memories highlight the drive and commitment Hamilton displayed even in the early days of his career. Despite his quiet nature at the time, Hamilton’s passion for racing and his constant pursuit of self-improvement were already evident, setting the stage for his remarkable rise in the sport.

His debut test with McLaren in 2006 was pivotal. It allowed the team to see firsthand the incredible potential that Hamilton possessed, confirming to McLaren that he was the right driver to take the team forward as they entered a new era.

Now, as he prepares for his next big step with Ferrari, Hamilton’s early experiences and growth in F1 remain key to understanding his drive and the potential he will bring to his new team. As the start of the 2025 season draws closer, all eyes will be on Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari and whether he can continue to add to his legacy with another team at the pinnacle of motorsport.
