David Coulthard, a former Red Bull driver, has expressed concern about Lewis Hamilton’s form as the seven-time world champion prepares for his highly anticipated debut with Ferrari. The British driver’s move from Mercedes to Ferrari has been one of the biggest stories in Formula 1, sparking widespread debate about what he can achieve with the iconic Italian team.
Hamilton, who is tied with Michael Schumacher for the most world titles in Formula 1 history, is widely considered one of the sport’s all-time greats. However, his transition to Ferrari follows a challenging 2024 season, during which his performance fell below expectations. He finished a disappointing seventh in the drivers’ standings, his worst result since his debut season in 2007.
The 2024 season also saw Hamilton struggling to keep up with his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, who outqualified him in 19 of the 24 races. These statistics have raised questions about whether Hamilton is still at the peak of his abilities or if the 39-year-old driver is beginning to decline.
Despite these setbacks, Ferrari hopes that Hamilton can help the team return to its former glory. The Scuderia has not won a Constructors’ Championship since 2008 or a Drivers’ Championship since 2007, and they see Hamilton’s experience and determination as assets to help end this drought.
However, Coulthard has warned Ferrari to manage their expectations. “An out-of-sorts Lewis Hamilton could spell trouble for Ferrari,” he said. “The team has placed a lot of faith in him, but his recent performances suggest that he may face an uphill battle to deliver the results they’re hoping for.”
Coulthard also pointed out the intense pressure that comes with racing for Ferrari. The team is known for its passionate fanbase and high expectations, which can weigh heavily on drivers, even those with Hamilton’s pedigree. “Ferrari is a unique challenge,” he added. “It’s not just about driving; it’s about managing the immense pressure and scrutiny that comes with representing such an iconic brand.”
As Hamilton gears up for his first season in red, all eyes will be on how he adapts to his new environment and whether he can overcome the challenges of 2024 to lead Ferrari back to the top. For now, doubts linger, but Hamilton’s legendary career suggests that writing him off would be premature.
