Lewis Hamilton Unharmed After Ferrari Test Crash in Barcelona

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton walked away unscathed following a crash during Ferrari’s private testing session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The British driver, who recently joined Ferrari for the 2025 season, was testing the team’s 2023 car, the SF-23, under the Testing of Previous Car (TPC) regulations.

Ferrari had scheduled a three-day test in Barcelona, with Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc taking turns behind the wheel. However, their program faced a setback when Hamilton lost control and hit the barriers, causing damage to the car’s suspension and bodywork. Despite the crash, Hamilton was able to exit the vehicle without any injuries and made his way back to the pits. Sky Sports News later confirmed that he was “absolutely fine,” emphasizing that incidents like this are common during test sessions.

Ferrari’s running was momentarily disrupted as the team worked to repair the SF-23, forcing Leclerc to delay his track time. Nevertheless, the test is set to continue, with both Hamilton and Leclerc completing their scheduled runs before Ferrari’s reserve and academy drivers, Antonio Giovinazzi and Dino Beganovic, take over on the final day of testing on January 30, 2025.

Under F1’s TPC regulations, teams are only allowed to run cars that are at least two years old, with a total mileage cap of 1,000 kilometers. This type of testing is used to help drivers familiarize themselves with team procedures, car characteristics, and setup preferences without breaching current-season restrictions.

While this was Hamilton’s first time driving a Ferrari F1 car, his official debut in the team’s latest challenger, the SF-24, will take place on February 4 and 5 at the same circuit. That session will also feature McLaren, as both teams participate in a Pirelli test to evaluate prototype tyres for the 2026 season.

Despite the minor setback, Hamilton’s crash is unlikely to impact Ferrari’s overall preparations as the team gears up for the upcoming F1 season. With pre-season testing scheduled for February in Bahrain, Hamilton and Leclerc will soon get their first proper taste of the SF-24 before the season opener in March.

For now, Ferrari fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their star signing is unharmed and ready for the challenges ahead.
