Lewis Hamilton’s crash during his second day of testing with Ferrari has sparked speculation about the cause of the incident. Fortunately, the driver emerged unharmed, but the crash disrupted his preparation for his debut with the team, limiting his valuable track time. Ferrari has downplayed the severity of the accident, explaining that Hamilton was simply testing the limits of his new car. They emphasized that such incidents are typical during testing, as drivers often push the car to understand its full performance potential.

Hamilton had previously completed a more cautious session at Fiorano, but he was given the opportunity to push harder during testing at Barcelona. On the day of the crash, he was behind the wheel of Ferrari’s SF-23, a model from two years ago. The collision with the barriers caused significant damage to the car, especially to the front suspension and some aerodynamic components. The car required several hours of repair before it could return to the track.

Hamilton was sharing testing duties with teammate Charles Leclerc, with the Monegasque driver scheduled to take over in the afternoon. However, the crash delayed Leclerc’s session, affecting his ability to complete his planned track time. While Ferrari has not specifically blamed Hamilton for the crash, the circumstances suggest that there may have been more factors involved than just driver error.

The crash occurred in the final sector of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a section of the track that has undergone significant modifications. The traditional chicane in this area has been removed, replaced by a high-speed double right-hand turn. Reports from AutoRacer suggest that the accident was likely caused by a bump in the circuit, which may have unsettled Hamilton’s car and caused him to lose control.

The recent changes to the track layout likely played a key role in the incident. The removal of the chicane and the introduction of faster, more challenging right-hand turns present a different challenge for drivers compared to the previous configuration. The bump that reportedly disrupted the car’s balance could have caused Hamilton to lose control, particularly as he was pushing the car to its limits. This suggests that while Hamilton was testing the boundaries of the SF-23, the new track features might have contributed to the crash.

Despite the setback, Ferrari remains focused on repairing the car and continuing preparations for the upcoming season. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks involved in pre-season testing, where drivers push their vehicles to the limit in order to collect valuable data and fine-tune their setups.
