BREAKING IN:Ferrari Tease Black Elements in SF-25 Livery for Lewis Hamilton’s Debut Season

Ferrari appears set to incorporate more black into their 2025 Formula 1 car’s livery, granting Lewis Hamilton’s long-time preference for the color—at least in part. The Italian team recently dropped a strong hint regarding the SF-25’s color scheme on social media, fueling speculation ahead of the car’s official unveiling.

Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari, first announced on February 1, 2024, raised questions about whether the seven-time World Champion would push for a dramatic change in Ferrari’s iconic red livery. His previous team, Mercedes, adopted a black livery in 2020 to support Hamilton’s off-track initiatives, alternating between black and silver in subsequent seasons. However, the 40-year-old driver dismissed suggestions that he would lobby for a similar shift at Ferrari, stating at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix that he “won’t be pushing for that too early on.”

Despite this, Ferrari’s latest teaser suggests black will have a greater presence on the SF-25 compared to its predecessor. The team officially confirmed the name of their 2025 challenger on Thursday, posting a short clip on social media to introduce ‘SF-25,’ the car formerly known as ‘Project 677.’ The teaser video featured a darker shade of red with prominent black elements, hinting at a revised color scheme for the upcoming season.

Italian journalist Giuliano Duchessa, a reliable source for Ferrari-related news, appeared to confirm the speculation, responding to the team’s post with: “Choosing maximum continuity before the revolution 678 [2026 car]. The colours are all there.” His comment suggests that while Ferrari’s classic red will remain dominant, the SF-25 will feature notable black accents, aligning with earlier reports of a “bold” new livery for Hamilton’s debut season.

Reports from PlanetF1.com earlier this month indicated that Ferrari was planning a deeper shade of red for the SF-25. While this would mark a distinct evolution of the team’s traditional look, it is unlikely to be as radical as the special burgundy livery used for Ferrari’s 1,000th race at the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix. Instead, the new design is expected to be a more refined yet modern interpretation of Ferrari’s historic identity.

Further fueling speculation, Ferrari recently released images of Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc in their new race overalls. The suits also hinted at an updated color scheme, potentially offering another preview of what fans can expect from the SF-25’s livery.

The introduction of black elements into the car’s design is likely to resonate with Hamilton, who has previously expressed an affinity for darker liveries. However, Ferrari remains deeply rooted in tradition, making a complete departure from their signature red unlikely. The upcoming 2025 season marks a new chapter for the Scuderia, with Hamilton joining forces with Leclerc as they aim to challenge for championships against dominant rivals Red Bull and Mercedes.

Ferrari will officially unveil the SF-25 on February 13, when the full livery and technical details of the car will be revealed. Until then, fans and analysts alike will continue to speculate on the extent of the changes Ferrari has planned for one of the most highly anticipated F1 seasons in recent history.
