Hamilton Reveals the Risk That Pushed Him to Leave Mercedes for Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton has shed light on the crucial risk that influenced his decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The seven-time world champion stunned the motorsport world last year when he announced his departure from Mercedes, a team where he secured six of his titles and experienced a dominant era in F1.
Despite their past success together, Mercedes’ struggles over the past three seasons frustrated Hamilton. Since narrowly missing out on the 2021 championship, he has endured a prolonged period without victory, spanning from the 2021 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix until his triumph at Silverstone in 2024. Furthermore, he failed to contend for the championship in his final years with the team.
Now, Hamilton has revealed that staying with Mercedes posed an even greater risk—one of stagnation and complacency. Speaking in a conversation with LinkedIn, the 40-year-old driver explained the reasoning behind his bold switch to Ferrari.
“Ultimately, every new opportunity is a leap of faith,” Hamilton stated. “None of us can predict the future, so changing jobs—or in my case, teams—always comes with some level of risk. But I believe there’s an even greater risk in staying where you’re comfortable and becoming complacent.”
The British driver emphasized that his instinct played a crucial role in making the decision, describing the move to Ferrari as the challenge he needed at this stage in his career.
“There are so many incredible people in the team that I can’t wait to work with, and I have total faith that we’ll achieve great things together,” he said.
Hamilton also reflected on his mindset toward each new F1 season, explaining that he never takes past success for granted.
“I look at every Formula 1 season as a new chapter,” he continued. “Even in the years when I’ve won races, trophies, and championships, I’ve known that nothing is guaranteed for the next season. My approach is to work hard every single day to ensure that when I get back in the car, I’m not just as good as I was before, but even better.”
This relentless drive for improvement has been the foundation of Hamilton’s success, and he believes it will propel him to new heights with Ferrari.
