Sergio Perez ‘is in talks over a shock F1 return’ – just two months after leaving Red Bull after disastrous 2024 season

Sergio Perez, the six-time Formula One race winner, is reportedly in negotiations with a team over a potential return to full-time racing after his exit from Red Bull Racing. Perez’s departure from the team came just two months ago, following a difficult 2024 season where he struggled to match his teammate Max Verstappen’s dominance. Despite Perez’s efforts, he finished 224 points behind Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship standings. This performance gap contributed to Red Bull’s inability to clinch the Constructors’ Championship title, despite Verstappen’s overwhelming success in the Drivers’ Championship, which he claimed with relative ease.

McLaren, on the other hand, managed to secure the Constructors’ Championship in 2024, with drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri delivering strong performances throughout the season. Amid the fallout from Perez’s disappointing season, there is now speculation about his next move in Formula One. According to a report from Spanish media outlet Marca, Perez is reportedly in talks with the American team Cadillac, which is set to enter Formula One as a full-fledged team in 2026. The talks suggest that the experienced Mexican driver could play a pivotal role in Cadillac’s entry into the sport.

Sources close to the negotiations have indicated that Cadillac sees Perez as a priority, with the team eager to recruit a seasoned driver with significant Formula One experience to lead their charge. It has been confirmed that Cadillac has already reached an agreement with General Motors, which will back their Formula One venture. As a new team entering the sport, Cadillac will likely purchase a customer engine, and reports suggest that discussions have taken place with Ferrari as a potential engine supplier.

Despite Perez’s impressive track record, having raced for teams such as McLaren, Racing Point, and Red Bull between 2011 and 2024, his recent results have been a concern. He has not won a race since April 2023, and in each season he has spent alongside Verstappen, he was outperformed, with Verstappen not only taking all the race wins but also securing four world titles. This stark contrast in performance led to the end of Perez’s tenure at Red Bull, though he has expressed gratitude for his time with the team.

Reflecting on his departure from Red Bull, Perez acknowledged the success they shared, saying, “I’m incredibly grateful for the past four years with Red Bull. We broke records and reached remarkable milestones.” Despite his exit, Perez’s future in Formula One may still include another chapter with a new team. As Cadillac prepares to enter the sport, Perez’s experience could be a key asset to their ambitions i
