Mercedes F1 Unveils Green Partnership with Chestnut Carbon

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team has taken a significant step in its sustainability journey by announcing a partnership with Chestnut Carbon, a U.S.-based nature-based carbon removal firm. This collaboration aligns with Formula 1’s broader objective of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, reinforcing the sport’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

Mercedes and Chestnut Carbon to Restore Degraded Farmland

A key focus of this new alliance is the restoration of degraded land, with the first initiative set to take place in the Southeastern United States. The project will see 200 hectares of farmland transformed into biodiverse forests, where more than 260,000 native trees will be planted. This large-scale afforestation effort is expected to bring multiple environmental benefits, including enhanced air and water quality, improved biodiversity, and economic support for rural communities.

Mercedes F1 has long been at the forefront of innovation, not only in racing technology but also in sustainability efforts. The team has committed to reducing its carbon footprint, and this new partnership is another step towards its ambition of becoming one of the most sustainable teams in global sports. Through their collaboration with Chestnut Carbon, they aim to implement large-scale carbon removal projects that will help offset emissions and contribute to the fight against climate change.

Formula 1’s Shift Towards Sustainability

Formula 1 has been actively working on sustainability initiatives, with a landmark change set to take effect in 2026. The introduction of a new generation of power units will mark a major shift, with engines featuring a 50/50 split between electrical power and an internal combustion engine running entirely on sustainable biofuel. This regulation change reflects the sport’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact while maintaining the high-performance racing standards that F1 is known for.

Mercedes’ latest partnership supports this broader mission by addressing emissions beyond the racetrack. While advancements in engine technology help lower F1’s direct carbon output, initiatives like afforestation and carbon capture play a crucial role in balancing the overall environmental footprint of teams and the sport as a whole.

Broader Impact on Communities and the Environment

Beyond environmental benefits, the collaboration between Mercedes and Chestnut Carbon is expected to have a positive social and economic impact. By restoring degraded land, the project will create job opportunities and support rural communities in the Southeastern United States. Improved biodiversity and healthier ecosystems will also enhance the region’s resilience to climate change.

Mercedes F1’s commitment to sustainability is not new, but this initiative marks a significant step in their long-term vision. By investing in large-scale reforestation and carbon capture, the team is not only working towards its own carbon neutrality goals but also setting an example for other organizations in the sporting world.

As Formula 1 continues its drive toward a greener future, partnerships like this demonstrate how teams can leverage their global influence to make a tangible environmental impact. With the first project already announced, Mercedes and Chestnut Carbon are poised to play a vital role in reshaping the sport’s sustainability landscape.
