McLaren Impresses in F1 Testing While Hamilton Brings Positive Energy

The three-day Formula 1 pre-season testing in Bahrain has left a strong impression that McLaren is set to continue its dominant form from last year. While testing results should always be taken with caution due to the many variables involved, McLaren’s performance, particularly in race simulations, suggests they have a clear advantage heading into the new season.

McLaren’s Strong Showing

Although lap times in testing are not always an accurate indicator of real-world performance, McLaren’s race pace stood out. The team appeared to have an edge over the competition, particularly in long runs.

Lando Norris completed a race-simulation run alongside Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli on the second day of testing. His performance was outstanding—over the full race distance, he would have finished more than 30 seconds ahead of his competitors, averaging over half a second per lap faster. Leclerc, in turn, had a slight advantage over Antonelli.

On the final day, a similar test took place between McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ George Russell. Again, the McLaren was quicker, but the margin was smaller. Piastri was around 0.2 seconds per lap faster than Russell, which would have resulted in a victory by just over 10 seconds. However, most of this advantage came in the first stint, where Piastri was 0.5 seconds faster per lap. In the later stages of the race simulation, the difference between the two cars shrank to just 0.05 seconds per lap.

Single-lap pace was less conclusive, with McLaren appearing to be on par with Ferrari, Red Bull, and Mercedes. George Russell posted the fastest time of the final day, just 0.021 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. The overall best lap of the test was set by Carlos Sainz, now with Williams after leaving Ferrari to make way for Lewis Hamilton.

Red Bull’s Form Still Unclear

One of the biggest uncertainties coming out of testing is Red Bull’s true pace. While Verstappen secured his fourth consecutive drivers’ title last season, his team’s performance in Bahrain testing was difficult to analyze. The conditions at the Sakhir track may not have suited Red Bull’s setup, making it hard to determine whether they are behind McLaren or just not showing their full potential.

Cautious Optimism from McLaren

Despite their impressive performance, McLaren is playing down suggestions that they are the outright favorites. Team principal Andrea Stella warned against drawing firm conclusions from Norris’ race simulation, noting that Bahrain’s cooler-than-usual conditions may have favored their car.

“The conditions were in a sweet spot for us—cool and not much wind,” Stella explained. He acknowledged that Bahrain’s layout, which features many slow corners and a focus on traction, has traditionally not been McLaren’s strongest circuit.

However, this perspective raises an interesting question—if McLaren can be this competitive at a track that doesn’t play to their strengths, how dominant might they be at circuits better suited to their car? The upcoming race in Melbourne, for example, could favor McLaren. Albert Park features medium-speed corners and a low-grip surface, where front-end grip is more crucial than rear-end stability, unlike in Bahrain.

Norris himself remained measured when discussing McLaren’s performance. Speaking alongside Verstappen and Leclerc, he acknowledged areas for improvement but expressed confidence in the car’s overall balance.

“If we want to improve anything, it’s the rear,” Norris said. “But the rest feels correct and in the same ballpark. I don’t think we are a big step ahead of everyone, but we expect to be close to these guys. If we’re there from the start, that’s what matters.”

Hamilton’s Positive Energy at Mercedes

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari has been a major storyline leading into the season. His replacement at Mercedes, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, showed promising pace, though Mercedes’ true competitiveness remains uncertain.

Hamilton himself has brought a sense of optimism to Ferrari, a team looking to return to the top after years of near-misses. While testing results don’t always translate directly into race-day performance, his experience and motivation could be a key factor for the Italian team in 2024.

Looking Ahead

While testing in Bahrain has provided some clues about the pecking order for the upcoming season, the true competitive picture will only become clear once the racing begins. McLaren appears to have the edge in race pace, but the battle with Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes is set to be intense.

The first race of the season in Bahrain will provide the first real answers. Until then, speculation will continue, but McLaren’s strong testing form has certainly put their rivals on high alert.
