Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota will miss Liverpool’s forthcoming games due to their respective red cards in the match against Tottenham on Saturday night.

After a VAR review, referee Simon Hooper’s yellow card for Jones’ 24-minute tackle on Yves Bissouma was upgraded to a red.

While it was obvious that the 22-year-old midfielder had caught Bissouma over the top of the ball, he also appeared to slip into the ill-timed challenge, which appeared worse on replay.

He is over the top, he added, the ball is moving and most definitely not a red, it just looks worse than it is.

His foot slips; it’s not a red for me; this will end the game, the referee said.

I could be mistaken, but I simply don’t know anymore. If you watch it in slow motion, you’ll realize it’s a red card. I don’t believe he went overboard to hurt him.

Diogo Jota, who had been substituted at halftime, was given two yellow cards for separate fouls in the space of two minutes, increasing Liverpool’s one-man disadvantage to two as they tried to hold on to a spirited point in the final 20 minutes.

They came close, playing outstanding defense, but the hosts’ Joel Matip own goal in the last seconds of regulation gave them the victory.
