Russell Hints at Wolff’s Long-Term Mercedes Vision Amid Verstappen Speculation

George Russell has downplayed any urgency over his Mercedes contract situation, hinting that team principal Toto Wolff may already have a long-term strategy in mind despite ongoing speculation linking Max Verstappen to the team.

Both Russell and young teammate Kimi Antonelli are out of contract after the 2025 season, though given their strong performances this year, extensions appear likely. Meanwhile, Verstappen’s future with Red Bull remains uncertain due to recent struggles compared to competitors like McLaren, fuelling rumours that the Dutchman could shake up Mercedes’ 2026 driver plans.

Wolff previously called Verstappen his top choice to replace Lewis Hamilton in 2024, but that move didn’t happen. Instead, Mercedes promoted 18-year-old Antonelli, who’s quickly made a name for himself by scoring points in all his opening races and currently outperforming several veterans in the standings.

Ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, Russell spoke calmly about his contract status and hinted at ongoing talks with Wolff.

“There’s absolutely no stress from my side,” he told the media. “In Formula 1, things can change fast, but contract discussions with Toto have always been straightforward — usually settled in a day, then handled by the lawyers.”

Russell added that his main focus is on racing, not contracts. “You’ve got to perform — that’s what matters. Right now, I’m enjoying driving and where I’m at in my career.”

As F1 prepares for a new era in 2026, Mercedes seems focused on locking down stability. Antonelli has already impressed with a standout debut and consistent top-10 finishes, showing he may be the team’s next big star. While Verstappen’s name continues to circulate, Mercedes could already be set for the future with their current lineup.
