FIA Investigates Liam Lawson Following FP1 at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix
Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson, who is supported by Red Bull, is under investigation by the FIA after an incident during the first practice session of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The 22-year-old finished FP1 in 11th place, trailing Red Bull teammates Yuki Tsunoda and Max Verstappen, who took P10 and P9 respectively.
The issue arose when Lawson was seen entering the painted area separating the pit entry from the track an act that prompted officials to review his conduct. The FIA confirmed post-session that the Kiwi driver is being investigated for allegedly violating Article 12.2.1 i) of the International Sporting Code, which pertains to disobeying instructions from race officials, potentially compromising event safety and order.
Sky Sports F1’s Rachel Brookes reported: “Lawson is being looked at by the stewards after failing to follow the race director’s instructions on two occasions during FP1.”
Despite the investigation, Lawson is set to participate in the second practice session scheduled for 8pm local time at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit. With nightfall bringing cooler conditions, FP2 is expected to offer a clearer picture of each team’s race pace ahead of qualifying and Sunday’s main event.
Earlier in the day, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly surprised the grid by setting the fastest time in FP1, ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris in second and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in third. The outcome of Lawson’s investigation remains to be seen and could have implications for his standing this weekend.
